Maryland English 10: what a high-school score means

On Maryland's MCAP, English 10 is reported on a scale from 650 to 850 (2022 to 2026), and each score falls into one of 4 performance levels. Reaching Proficient Learner, at 750 or above, is the state's proficiency line.

The score ranges changed during these years, so each period has its own table below, newest first.

Score ranges by performance level

2022 to 2026

From 2022, English 10 has 4 levels instead of 5, so a score from before 2022 is not directly comparable to one from 2022 on. Percentiles are, because each year is compared with its own students.

Who takes this test

These counts are not limited to the spring test: in every year MSDE's technical reports let us check (2023 to 2025), they also include the students who tested in winter. Middle-school students who take Algebra I or Geometry early are included, counted at their middle school.

Is a particular score good?

A score's meaning depends on where it lands in the ranges above, and on how it compares to other students who took the same test. Our free tool turns an English 10 score into an estimated percentile versus the school, district and the whole state, so you can see where a score stands, not just its level.
