Vermont Grade 9 Math: what a high-school score means

On Vermont's VTCAP (and, through 2022, Smarter Balanced) tests, Grade 9 Math is reported on a scale from 1500 to 2000 (2023 to 2025), and each score falls into one of 4 performance levels. Reaching Proficient, at 1750 or above, is the state's proficiency line.

The score ranges changed during these years, so each period has its own table below, newest first.

Score ranges by performance level

2023 to 2025

From 2023, Grade 9 Math has a new score scale (1500 to 2000), so a score from before 2023 is not directly comparable to one from 2023 on. Percentiles are, because each year is compared with its own students.

Who takes this test

These numbers are the Vermont public school students in grade 9 tested in ELA and math, and in grade 11 tested in science, by the school where they tested: Smarter Balanced through 2022 and VTCAP from 2023 for ELA and math, the New England science test (NGSA) through 2022 and VTCAP science from 2023. Where Vermont hides a small school's results, the school is estimated from its supervisory union's or the state's results and its own grade enrollment.

Is a particular score good?

A score's meaning depends on where it lands in the ranges above, and on how it compares to other students who took the same test. Our free tool turns a Grade 9 Math score into an estimated percentile versus the school, supervisory union and the whole state, so you can see where a score stands, not just its level.
