On Arizona's AzMERIT tests, Grade 11 ELA is reported on a scale from 2465 to 2675 (2018 and 2019), and each score falls into one of 4 performance levels. Reaching Proficient, at 2585 or above, is the state's proficiency line.
| Level | Score range | What it means | Statewide 2019 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimally Proficient | 2465–2568 | The lowest level, well below the state standard | 51% |
| Partially Proficient | 2569–2584 | Approaching the state standard | 16% |
| Proficient | 2585–2607 | Meeting the state standard (the proficiency line) | 20% |
| Highly Proficient | 2608–2675 | The highest level, above the state standard | 13% |
Statewide in 2019, about 33% of the students counted for Grade 11 ELA reached Proficient or Highly Proficient. The bar above shows the share at each level (left = lowest). 2019 is the most recent year with Grade 11 ELA results.
ACT ELA and ACT Math are Arizona's high-school test since spring 2022: every public school student in the grade 11 class takes the ACT with Writing at school in the spring, and ACT ELA is the average of the English, Reading and Writing scores. Science is the AzSCI science test, taken by the same grade 11 class each spring (2022 to 2025). The 2018 and 2019 tests are AzMERIT end-of-course tests: ELA 9, 10 and 11 at the end of each year's English course, and Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II at the end of each course. They count every test given that school year (summer, fall and spring), with each student's highest score, and the math courses include middle-school students who took the course early (about one Algebra I tester in five was in grade 8), counted at their middle school. In 2019 about 12,000 juniors at 54 schools took the ACT or SAT in place of the grade 11 tests, so they are not in the 2019 grade 11 results. Every result counts students enrolled in an Arizona public school (district or charter), at the school where they tested. For 2022 Arizona published only the percentage of students at each level, not how many students tested, so 2022 results are shown as percentages.

A score's meaning depends on where it lands in the ranges above, and on how it compares to other students who took the same test. Our free tool turns a Grade 11 ELA score into an estimated percentile versus the school, district, county and the whole state, so you can see where a score stands, not just its level.
